Sportsman of the
month: Muhammad Ali.
Cassius Marcellus Clay also known as “The Greatest” is an American
professional boxer born in January 17, 1942. Cassius changed his name to Muhammad
Ali after joining Islam in 1964 years after he adopted Sufism. The same year
Ali won his first World Heavy Weight Championship. In 1967 he made a controversial decision
by rejecting an order from the U.S military to join the Vietnam War; his religious
beliefs made him think that invading people that didn't harm him is not right. After
that he won the World Heavy Weight Championship three times in a row. In his young age he
had many historical fights that made him a legend amongst all boxers, one in
particular with his rival Joe Frazier. His boxing techniques were unique because
it was beautiful but dangerous; two of these are techniques are “Ali the shuffle”
and “Rope-a-dope”; at the same time some quoted that he “floated like a butterfly,
stung like a bee”. In 1999 he was crowned “Sportsman of the Century” by Sports Illustrated
and “Sport Personality of the Century” by the BBC because of his amazing skill
of fighting and great character
